Bins Near Me

Help map the UK's public bins

This map is built by the community. 83,393 bins come from OpenStreetMap volunteers. 51,895 come from 21 councils and public bodies that publish their own records. Every report and every new record makes the map better for the next person.

Report a problem

Tell us about a bin that is missing, removed, in the wrong place or has the wrong type. Give the street or a map link. We check each report before we change the map.

Add bins to OpenStreetMap

Add a point with the tag amenity=waste_basket. For a dog waste bin, add waste=dog_excrement. Your change comes into this map at the next data refresh.

The free StreetComplete app for Android asks simple questions about places near you, such as whether a bin takes dog waste. Each answer updates OpenStreetMap.

Ask your council to publish its bin data

Most councils keep a list of the bins they empty, but few publish it. When a council publishes its list, we add every bin and its location note to the map. You can send this request to your council's open data or freedom of information team.

Dear [council name],

Please publish the locations of the litter bins and dog waste bins that the council manages as open data. A CSV or GeoJSON file with the coordinates, bin type and a short location note would help residents and visitors find the nearest bin.

Please publish the data under the Open Government Licence v3.0, or tell me where the council already publishes it.

Thank you.

You can also send the request in public on WhatDoTheyKnow. If your council publishes a file, send us the link.

Who publishes bin data
